The farmers around MITI village organised themselves into a group to share best farming practice and improve their bargaining power with ‘middlemen’ by selling their produce collectively.
The group now offer a chance for tourists to visit the farm to see coffee production from the plant to the cup. Visit the Mr Kasekende’s coffee seedling nursery and gardens and, in the harvesting season, pick the ripe cherries from the trees. Then see how the coffee is dried and packed for wholesale.
Afterwards, join the local ladies roasting and pounding the coffee and chat with them as you drink a cup. As you leave they will give you a souvenir bag of roasted coffee to take home with you. Finally, should you wish to, you can visit the local coffee processing factory on your way back to the hotel. Please bring walking boots or strong trainers.
